Long Term Care |
The best way to address the problem of Long Term Care is to accumulate great wealth before you need care! Since the monthly cost of care in the Maryland area approximates $4680- $5730 ( The Guide to Retirement Living, Winter,2005, Greater Washington Publishing, page 9 ), a very large sum of money could be needed for custodial care for an indeterminate time period.
Although it makes no sense to over-insure (check available assets/income first), Long Term Care Insurance provides an often desirable way to partially or wholly fund a future need for Long Term Care, whether that need be for care at home, in a nursing home, or care in an assisted living facility, so long as threshold tests on the need for care are met. Typically, neither your health insurance nor MediCare provides a comprehensive Long Term Care solution. Medicaid ( a welfare program) can provide a solution, but only after most assets and income are gone, and at the expense of choice of type of care and type of accomodations.
